What Are the Most Common Crimes in California?

California’s most common type of criminal convictions were property crimes, including burglary, vandalism, theft, trespassing, and larceny. Law enforcement reports for the state mentioned that these property crimes increased between 2019 and 2022. In particular, commercial robberies grew for nine out of the 15 largest counties in California.

Los Angeles County has the highest rate of commercial robberies, reaching 60 incidents per 100,000 residents. San Joaquin, Sacramento, and Kern Counties had similarly high rates. In comparison, Ventura, Orange, and San Francisco Counties were the three safest counties in the state, with 15, 23, and 25 incidents per 100,000 residents, respectively.

Has There Been a Change in Violent Crime Rates in Recent Years?

Violent crime convictions in California have increased significantly in recent years, especially compared to pre-COVID rates. The crime rate has increased by 13.5%, according to the Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC). In 2019, there were 436 cases of violent crimes per 100,000 residents. 

These statistics indicate there’s been an uptick to approximately 495 convictions for violent crimes per 100,000 residents in the state. However, this reflects crime rates across the rest of the country. Thankfully, this is still significantly lower than rates in the 1990s. There was an all-time high of violent crimes in 1992, where there were 1,115 violent crimes per every 100,000 residents. 

Are There Any Patterns in Crime Rates Across Different Demographics?

There is significant conversation surrounding the demographics of individuals arrested and convicted of crimes. In California, according to FBI Crime Data Explorer, percentages of black and white individuals who have committed violent crimes are the following:

• 66.54% – White 
• 23.54% – Black or African American 

However, it is essential to consider that these are only the percentages associated with convicted individuals, and these numbers do not automatically indicate whether there is discrimination amongst these racial demographics.

According to the PPIC, California’s population in percentages in 2022 was comprised of the following:

• 40% – Latino
• 35% – White
• 15% – Asian or Pacific Islander
• 5% – Black
• 4% – Multiracial
• Less than 1% Native American or Alaska Native

While these numbers are not based on the exact same data, we can draw certain conclusions with these percentages. Based on these numbers, there would appear to be a discrepancy between the population and which demographics are most likely to be convicted of a crime. 

Additional California Crime Statistics

According to the Criminal Justice Statistics Center, there have been multiple changes in crime rates in California. In 2022, according to their report, the following is true:

• Homicide rates have decreased by 5%, from six instances per 100,000 individuals in 2021 to 5.7 cases per 100,000 in 2022
• Robbery rates have increased by 10.2% from 2021 to 2022
• Larceny theft rates have increased by 7.7% from 2021 to 2022, from 1,375.1 instances to 1,480.3 instances per 100,000 individuals in the population
• Arson rates have decreased by 11% from 2021 to 2022
• From 2021 to 2022, the total arrest rate in California has decreased by 2.7%, with 2.606.3 arrests versus 2,535.2 arrests per 100,000 individuals, respectively
